Argentine Central Bank Enables Electronic USD Checks

The Argentine Central Bank (BCRA) issued Communication “A” 8299 on August 7, 2025, incorporating USD as an accepted currency for operating bank checking accounts. The Communication also establishes that it will only be possible to issue checks in USD electronically (ECHEQ).

The possibility of authorizing overdrafts on these accounts will be subject to the current regulations regarding Credit Policy. Authorized overdrafts for these USD checking accounts may only be paid with funds in that currency that are freely available to the client.

The deadline for financial institutions offering checking accounts that allow depositing checks to implement the necessary mechanisms to receive ECHEQs in USD is set for December 1, 2025.

This measure is part of the federal government’s policy to promote currency competition, as well as the BCRA’s policies to expand the range of services and financial products that banks offer.
