Campaign to Prevent Telephone and Digital Scams

The Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires passed Law 6877, aimed at raising awareness and preventing telephone and digital scams targeting senior adults.

The Law creates an Information and Prevention Campaign Against Telephone and Digital Scams specifically aimed at senior adults. The campaign seeks to inform, train, and raise public awareness about telephone and digital scams. At the same time, it offers concrete strategies to prevent these types of fraud by providing clear tools on how to act if there is an attempted scam and how to file the corresponding complaints. The results of the development of the campaign will be reported on a regular basis.

The Executive Branch of the City of Buenos Aires will appoint an enforcement authority, which will also be in charge of entering into agreements with banking and/or financial institutions to implement the campaign.

The enforcement authority will develop the contents of the campaign, which will include specific recommendations for senior adults, together with useful phone numbers, addresses, and contact information for inquiries, emergencies, and complaints. The information will be disseminated through social media, the official websites of the City of Buenos Aires Government, and the platforms of the institutions that join the initiative through cooperation agreements.

Through this initiative, the Government of the City of Buenos Aires aims to reduce the impact of telephone and digital scams by promoting preventive education and access to reliable information and strengthen protection of senior adults.
