Public Prosecutor’s Office Launches AI Program

On 14 May 2025, through Resolution PGN 14/25, the General Prosecutor's Office (PPO) formalized the creation of its Artificial Intelligence Program. Its main goal is to develop a strategic and comprehensive approach for incorporating AI technologies in the PPO’s different areas, with the aim of strengthening its functions, improving internal processes, automating tasks, and generating information that facilitates decision-making. Resolution PGN 14/25 also emphasizes the importance of an ethical, transparent, and responsible implementation of AI technologies, ensuring respect for human rights and constitutional guarantees.

The Program is part of the PPO’s institutional modernization policy. It seeks to align the PPO’s practices with international standards in the field. Particularly, it is based on good practices and principles recommended in the European Union AI Regulation, the Council of Europe Framework Convention, and the recommendations of UNESCO and the OECD, among others.

The specific purposes of the Program include evaluating existing technological solutions, identifying good practices, and drafting guidelines for using AI within the PPO. It also provides staff training and promoting an organizational culture that encourages adopting these technologies in a safe, responsible, and efficient manner. Accordingly, it highlights the need to guarantee human control over AI tools, ensuring that responsible actors continue being in charge of decisions.

The Secretariat of Institutional Coordination will be responsible for developing and monitoring the Program, in collaboration with other PPO departments. The participation of specialists and coordination with academic and scientific institutions are envisaged to ensure the proper implementation of AI tools.

The creation of this Program represents a significant step in the PPO’s digital transformation, aimed at improving the efficiency and quality of justice services for the benefit of society.
