AAIP Participates in G7 Authorities Roundtable

The Agency for Access to Public Information (AAIP), represented by its head, Beatriz de Anchorena, participated in the Roundtable of Data Protection and Privacy Authorities of G7 members, a forum that brings together the data protection authorities of G7 countries to exchange experiences, discuss regulatory challenges, and promote international cooperation on privacy matters. International organizations, global networks, and invited authorities also attended this edition to analyze the main legal and technological developments.

One of the main themes of the meeting was international cooperation. In that context, de Anchorena presented the Council of Europe's Convention 108+ as an international standard for promoting common data protection principles and mechanisms among countries with different regulatory frameworks. She also noted that the instrument is four ratifications away from entering into force, which would allow the cooperation network to be expanded to new jurisdictions. She further pointed out that, in a context of technological acceleration and geopolitical tensions, Convention 108+ provides a legal basis for strengthening cooperation among authorities, contributing greater legal certainty, and applying personal data protection principles to the challenges posed by emerging technologies.

The agenda also included a panel dedicated to the protection of children and adolescents online, which examined the challenges posed by digital platforms and the need to move toward comprehensive regulatory approaches. During the meeting, participants highlighted the importance of coordinating personal data protection, safety by design, age verification mechanisms, and greater platform accountability, as well as promoting common minimum standards applicable to services minors can access.

De Anchorena also moderated a session on risk-based data governance and artificial intelligence, in which representatives of international organizations and regulatory authorities discussed mechanisms for translating the general principles of AI governance into practical implementation models that promote responsible innovation and strengthen trust.

As a result of the sessions, the authorities issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to strengthening international cooperation among data protection and privacy authorities. In addition, they published a statement on privacy-respectful age verification mechanisms and a document with recommendations for protecting the privacy of children and adolescents on connected home devices, addressed to manufacturers and digital service providers.
