Ministry of Justice Creates Strategic AI Working Group

The Ministry of Justice of Argentina established the Strategic Artificial Intelligence Working Group for the Judiciary (MEIAJ) through Resolution 469/2026. The working group will operate under the Office of the Chief of Advisors and will be responsible for coordinating initiatives involving the use of artificial intelligence within the judiciary.

The Resolution provides that the MEIAJ will contribute to the development of a common strategy to coordinate and articulate initiatives involving these technologies. However, it clarifies that the working group is not intended to establish a general regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, but rather to provide an institutional planning and coordination framework to facilitate innovation, experimentation, and the responsible and secure adoption of technological solutions.

Among its main functions, the working group will be responsible for reviewing existing initiatives, projects, tools, and experiences involving artificial intelligence within the judiciary. It will also identify institutional needs, available capabilities, and priority areas for implementing artificial intelligence-based solutions.

The MEIAJ will also analyze and propose use cases and pilot projects to assess the usefulness, feasibility, security, and impact of the solutions under consideration. It may also promote training activities for judges, officials, and employees regarding the use of these technologies.

The working group will be coordinated by the head of the Office of the Chief of Advisors. Representatives of the Secretariat of Justice, the Secretariat of Citizen Engagement, the Undersecretariat for Criminal Policy, the Argentine Directorate of the Argentine Legal Information System (SAIJ), and the Ministry’s information technology area have been invited to join. Representatives of the Federal Judiciary, Public Prosecutors’ Offices, provincial authorities, universities, bar associations, technology companies, and specialists in the field may also be invited to participate. The MEIAJ will coordinate its activities with the Federal Comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Program for the Judiciary, established in 2024, notwithstanding the latter’s respective powers.

The Resolution also establishes certain parameters to implement these technologies. It especially provides that applicable regulations on personal data protection, information security, intellectual property, transparency, and the protection of rights must be observed. It also contemplates the adoption of appropriate mechanisms for human oversight, traceability, and risk assessment.

The MEIAJ will have 90 calendar days from its first meeting to submit a preliminary strategy proposal to the Minister of Justice. This measure thus establishes an institutional framework to review and coordinate existing initiatives and assess new artificial intelligence projects within the judiciary.
