Approval of an Argentine Appellation of Origin

Since the passing of Law No 25,380 which established the system of protection of Geographical Indications (GI) and Appellations of Origin (AO) back in 2001, several GI and/or AO were filed for registration. However, the delay in regulating the mentioned act resulted in the postponement of the registrations until May 2009, when the act was finally regulated.

Whilst numerous GI for vinic products were acknowledged ex-officio, those GI applications for agricultural and food products did not proceed due to lack of regulation of the corresponding law.

The acknowledgement and registration of the AO “CHIVITO CRIOLLO DEL NORTE NEUQUINO” by Resolution No. 950/2010 therefore represents an important step towards the protection of Argentine GI in the agricultural and food field.

Resolution No. 950/2010 was issued by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Breeding and Fishing of the Ministry of Economic and Production and published in the Official Gazette on December 17, 2010.

The main terms of Resolution No. 950/2010 are as follows:

  1. The “chivito criollo del norte neuquino” Production Protocol is approved.
  2. The Appellation of Origin (AO) “CHIVITO CRIOLLO DEL NORTE NEUQUINO” is recognized, registered and protected as an AO.
  3. The certificate evidencing the right to use the AO “CHIVITO CRIOLLO DEL NORTE NEUQUINO” is issued on behalf of the Regulatory Council of such AO.
