Xstrata, the Anglo-Swiss mining company, gave the green light to a prefeasibility study for the expansion of its copper sulfide project Lomas Bayas in Chile. The investment of US$ 1,600 million would almost double the production of Lomas Bayas to 140,000 annual tons of copper and it would extend its useful life until 2039.
