Draft Bills: Flagship and Emblematic Wines in Argentina
On March 7, 2014 Congressman Juan Carlos Romero submitted two draft bills related to the viticulture industry.
The first draft bill seeks that the Argentine wine Torrontés be declared “Flagship White Wine of Argentina” (Vino Blanco Insignia Argentino) (art. 1). The National Institute of Viticulture, or the corresponding organization, is charged to create the Torrontés wine logo and campaign to position it as the flagship white wine of Argentina in any official and/or commercial events in Argentina and/or abroad (art. 2). The bill also orders that all producer regions of grapes and Torrontés wine be declared as “Producer Regions of the Flagship White Wine of Argentina” (art. 3).
According to its Statement of Intent, declaring it the flagship white wine of Argentina would make the Torrontés wine stand out over the other excellent white wines produced in Argentina, and would add value to it.
The second draft bill parallels the first and seeks that the Argentine red wine, Malbec varietal, be declared “Emblematic Red Wine of Argentina” (Vino Tinto Emblematico Argentino). The National Institute of Viticulture, or the corresponding organization, is charged to create the Malbec wine logo and campaign to position it as the emblematic red wine of Argentina in any official and/or commercial events in Argentina and/or abroad (art. 2).
