Videogames: manufacturers and/or importers’ obligations

On June 1, 2005 the Argentine Congress passed Law No 26,043 pursuant to which videogames manufacturers and/or importers must place the following legend on the packages used to market such products: “Overexposure is harmful to health”.
They will also have to include the following rating legends “Rated for the general public”, “Rated for people over 13 years old” and “Rated for people over 18 years old”, as it may correspond. The Argentine Institute of Cinematography and Visual Arts will be the entity in charge of rating the videogames, jointly with the Argentine Council of Childhood, Youth and Family.
Failure to comply with the above-mentioned obligations is sanctioned with a fine not lower than two hundred times the videogame price, which will duplicate in the event of repeated infringements.
A statutory decree aimed at ruling further details regarding this law must be enacted before October 18, 2005.
