Sextortion

Sextortion is understood as a form of corruption in which sex –rather than money- is the currency of the bribe.

During 2015, Marval O’Farrell & Mairal coordinated the preparation of a study on laws and practices of eight jurisdictions relating to this conduct, together with leading firms in the respective jurisdictions.

On the basis of this study, the Thompson Reuters Foundation, in collaboration with the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), launched a guide “Combatting Sextortion: A Comparative Study of Laws to Prosecute Corruption Involving Sexual Exploitation.”

During 2016, Marval O’Farrell & Mairal led the expansion of the study to cover nine European jurisdictions, as a project of the Rule of Law Section of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA), in collaboration with member firms from Greece, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Poland, Italy, Switzerland and Hungary.

This new international team led by Marval O’Farrell & Mairal will provide the IAWJ and the UIA with a comprehensive report about a behavior that affects women around the world, but has hardly ever been addressed by the authorities.

We are confident that it will be a great contribution to raise awareness about this important issue and help advocate towards the adoption of legal measures to combat sextortion.
