The Ministry of Security Creates Unit of Artificial Intelligence Applied to Security

The Ministry of Security created the Unit of Artificial Intelligence Applied to Security (UIAAS) within the scope of the Directorate of Cybercrime and Cyber Affairs, through Resolution 710/2024. The grounds for creating it include the fact that Artificial Intelligence represents one of the most significant socio-technological changes for the public, and that countries such as the United States of America, China, the United Kingdom, Israel, France, Singapore, India, among others, are pioneers in using it in their government areas and security forces.

The Resolution also highlights that these countries are at the forefront of integrating Artificial Intelligence technologies to strengthen their citizens’ security and protection, improving their efficiency and effectiveness. Therefore, it is essential to apply it in the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of crimes and its derivates.

The UIAAS will be led by the Director of Cybercrime and Cyber Affairs and will comprise representatives from the Federal Police and security forces.

Among its powers, the UIAAS will have the mission of:

  • Patrolling social networks and Internet sites, including the "deep web" or "dark web," to investigate crimes and identify perpetrators, and to detect situations of serious risk to security,
  • Identifying and comparing images.
  • Analyzing images from security cameras in real time and using algorithms for historical data analysis and crime prevention.
  • Detecting patterns in computer networks and cyber threats to prevent cyberattacks.
  • Conducting aerial patrols with drones, aerial surveillance, and disarming explosives with robots.
  • Improving communication among security forces.
  • Analyzing activities on social networks to detect threats.
  • Detecting suspicious financial transactions.

This measure is issued in the context of Resolution 428/2024 of the Ministry of Security, which seeks the adaptation and implementation of guidelines, recommendations, and directives to the federal police and security forces to prevent and detect crimes through the use of publicly-accessible websites and open digital sources.
