Secretary of Food, Bioeconomy and Regional Development Registers Two New Geographical Indications

“Kiwi Mar y Sierras del sudeste de Buenos Aires” and “Aceite de oliva virgen extra de Mendoza” are the first geographical indications to be registered for these types of agricultural food products in Latin America.

Secretary of Food, Bioeconomy and Regional Development Registers Two New Geographical Indications

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, through the Secretary of Food, Bioeconomy and Regional Development, recognized new geographical indications (GIs): “KIWI MAR Y SIERRAS DEL SUDESTE DE BUENOS AIRES” (“Sierras del Sudeste de Buenos Aires Kiwi”) and “ACEITE DE OLIVA VIRGEN EXTRA DE MENDOZA” (“Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Mendoza”). The decision was made effective through Resolutions No. 31/2022 and 33/2022, published in the Official Gazette respectively on June 7 and June 8, 2022.

The petitions for the recognition, registration, protection, and right to use of these GIs were filed by Asociación Olivícola De Mendoza (ASOLMEN) and Asociación Civil Cámara de Productores de Kiwi de Mar del Plata. The GIs were granted, considering that all the corresponding legal requirements in Law No. 25380 -as amended by Law No. 25966, which regulates the protection of GIs for agricultural and food products- were met.
 

Under these resolutions:
 

a) the certificates formally acknowledging the right to use each GI were issued.

b) the isologotypes to commercialize the products protected by each GI were approved.

c) the products identified with the above recognized GIs must bear the Geographical Indication distinctive sign, as approved by Resolution No. 546/2011 of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (see "Geographical Indications for Agricultural and Food Products", published in Marval News # 109 of September 30, 2011).

With these recognitions, two more GIs are added to the list of Geographical Indications and appellations of origin, recognized by the Secretary of Food, Bioeconomy and Development for agricultural and food products. The list consists of the following GIs and AOs:
 

· Alcauciles platenses

· Salame Típico de Colonia Caroya

· Salame de Tandil

· Cordero Patagónico

· Chivito criollo del Norte Neuquino

· Melón de Media Agua

· Yerba Mate

· Dulce de Membrillo Rubio de San Juan

· Espárragos de Médano de Oro de San Juan

· Kiwi Mar y Sierras del Sudeste de Buenos Aires

· Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra de Mendoza
