The Swiss company Xstrata Copper, the largest shareholder of copper and gold Bajo La Alumbrera mine, with 50% of the company, has announced the construction of another open pit mine, but in Calingasta, in the Province of San Juan. It is the El Pachón copper deposit, wholly owned by Xstrata since it acquired Canadian company Falconbridge in 2006. With a total investment of USD 4100 million, the company will begin the works to exploit the deposit.
