The inhabitants of the rural area of Malargüe are hoping to receive, in the short term, their own supply of electric energy. The Brazilian mining company Vale presented a project to build an electric power station and an electric line of 120 kilometers long, to supply their project of lithium salts extraction. The project, which will require a 60 million dollar investment from the company, was announced by mining referents to municipal authorities, to the town councilor, members of the provincial Commerce Chamber and inhabitants of El Cortaderal. The initiative announced by Vale-Potasio Río Colorado (PRC) involves the building of an electric power station of 500/132 Kw, which shall be built 600 meters away from El Cortaderal, a 132 Kw electric line approximately 120 km long -starting from the electric power stations to the mine located in Cañadón Amarillo- and an electric power station of 132/33 Kw in Cañadón Amarillo, which will supply energy to the future potassium salt mine.
