Annual Report on Cybercrime

The Tax Division Specialized on Cybercrime (UFECI) published its 2022/2023 report and highlighted that the number of reports associated with cybercrimes has increased significantly, although at a slower pace compared to that during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report also indicates an increase in the number of strategic preliminary investigations of these types of crimes. The measures taken include identifying related events and consolidating them in a single legal case, to extract data and conclusions that aid in solving complex cases.

At the same time, the report refers to a growth in the requests for assistance that federal prosecutors and courts across Argentina, federal prosecutors and courts with jurisdiction in the City of Buenos Aires, and the Attorney General's Office, Tax Units, and other areas of the Attorney General's Office send to UFECI.

In that sense, most investigations focus on online fraud, with purchase scams as the dominant modality. There has also been a substantive increase in phishing and ransomware cases, as well as in incidents of harassment and defamation.
