Tariffs and Excise Taxes on Electronic Products Now Reduced
The Executive reduced certain duties and taxes applicable to mobile phones, video game consoles, televisions, and other electronics.
Through Decree 333/2025, published in the Official Gazette on May 20, 2025, the Federal Executive implemented a series of measures aimed at facilitating access to electronic goods.
The Decree adds "smartphones" and "portable cellular phones, except satellite phones" to the list of Information Technology and Telecommunications Goods in Annex IV of Decree 557/2023. Their import will be subject to an import duty of 8% until January 14, 2026, and 0% onwards.
This represents a 50% reduction from the previously applicable 16% duty in the first phase. This measure will remain in effect until December 31, 2028, pursuant to article 1 of Decision 8/21 of the Common Market Council.
In addition, "video game consoles and machines, except those under subheading 9504.30" were removed from Annex V of Decree 557/2023. As a result, they will no longer be subject to a 35% import duty, and will instead be taxed at a 20% rate, consistent with the Mercosur Common External Tariff.
Furthermore, the excise tax rate applicable to products such as air conditioners, refrigeration units, cell phones, monitors, and televisions was reduced from 19% to 9.5%. The Decree also establishes a 0% internal tax rate for these products until December 31, 2038, provided they originate from the Special Customs Area of Tierra del Fuego, Antartida, and Islas del Atlantico Sur.
These measures seek to improve supply conditions, reduce market prices, and enhance consumers’ access to everyday technologies, while also lowering manufacturing costs and strengthening the sector’s competitiveness and productivity.
Decree 333/2025 entered into force on May 21, 2025.
