UK Recognizes Traditional Argentine Wine Terms
The recognition strengthens the competitiveness of Argentine wine and upholds its quality standards.
On July 2, 2025, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) officially recognized five traditional terms used in the production and marketing of Argentine wines: “Gran Reserva,” “Reserva,” “Crianza,” “Vino Dulce Natural,” and “Generoso.”
This approval is the result of joint efforts by the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the Argentine Institute of Viticulture (INV), and the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These terms may only be used in the UK market if the wines meet the technical and quality requirements set by the INV. This ensures product authenticity and protects consumers.
The UK accounts for around 15% of Argentina’s wine exports. This recognition strengthens the sector’s position in a high-value market and helps consolidate Argentina’s reputation as a producer of world-class wines.
