Recommendations from the Agency of Access to Public Information to Protect Minors’ Privacy
With the objective of promoting a responsible use of technology, the Agency of Access to Public Information published a series of recommendations to protect minors’ privacy online.
Due to early use of social networks and the internet, children are exposed to content that might be inappropriate for their age to which they are redirected by websites, videogames or online adverts. The Agency of Access to Public Information (the AAIP” after its acronym in Spanish) highlights that exposure to such contents may produce harmful emotional and psychological consequences to minors.
In these circumstances, the AAIP elaborated a series of recommendations to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate online content, namely to:
- Encourage within the family group a safe use of technology and constantly support minors in this process.
- Establish specific mechanisms that restrict access to inappropriate online content and allow the control of children and adolescents’ use of devices.
- Encourage the use of safe search engines and applications with content exclusively for children, that enable parental control.
- Set in advance applications’ privacy and security features.
- Read the applications’ terms and conditions, verifying the minimum age recommended for its use.
