Argentina’s Full Lockdown and Mandatory Social Distancing Measures are Extended

On October 12, Decree No. 792/2020 (the “Decree”) was published in the Official Gazette, extending the term of Argentina’s nationwide lockdown, known locally as “Social, Preventive and Mandatory Isolation” to October 25, 2020 for certain areas of the country while also ordering “Social, Preventive and Mandatory Distancing” throughout other areas of the country.

Social, Preventive and Mandatory Distancing means that people can circulate within their city of residence, work, and go about their activities as long as they stay 2 meters (6 feet) away from each other and adhere to established protocols.

Throughout the country, only essential workers and/or people in need of medical care can use the public transportation system.

Meanwhile, Social, Preventive and Mandatory Isolation, or lockdown, will continue in force for the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires.

The Decree allows schools to reopen for in-person classes throughout the country, continues to prohibit the circulation of individuals with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases, maintains in-person work exemptions for people in so-called risk groups, and continues to ban the entry of non-resident foreigners until October 25, 2020. Finally, the Decree authorizes outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people in public spaces provided that protocols are met, a 2 meter distance is kept, facemasks are worn and the gatherings are duly authorized by the local authorities of each jurisdiction.
