President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in reference to those voices against mining activity in the country, said yesterday that any mining project that contaminates the environment “will not be authorized,” as well as mentioning the industry’s potential in the country. This is how she expressed herself while leading the celebration of the National Agreement for the Promotion of Social Dialogue in the Mining Industry, during a ceremony held in the “Casa Rosada” (Executive Branch’s Office), with the Governors of the mining provinces and the Secretary of Mining Affairs, Jorge Mayoral. The President also said that “every mining investment is viable and advisable,” after assuring that this sector is one of the most dynamic in the country. Immediately afterwards, she determined that “we launch a national project so that the mining projects and environmental protection are government policies.” “Argentina has the opportunity of becoming a country of the most diversified production, adding to this, a sector such as mining,” remarked the head of state. During the ceremony she led in the hall of Argentine Women of the Bicentennial the President mentioned “the effort that Argentina is making in producing an environmental sustainable policy for the entire mining sector.” The head of state signaled that the environmental impact of the mining investments must be “looked into.” and “to see if they contaminate or not, and if they do, they will not be authorized nor will anyone agree with them.”
