The Argentine Institute of Viticulture Registers New GI for Wines and Spirits of Vinic Origin
Victoria, Entre Rios was recognized, protected and registered as a Geographical Indication in Argentina.
The National Institute of Viticulture (the “INV,” for its acronym in Spanish) has issued Resolution No. 5/2021, published in the Official Gazette on May 4, 2021, by which the area known as Victoria, Entre Ríos was recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI).
The legal framework that regulates the designation and presentation of wines and spirits of vinic origin in Argentina consists of Law No. 25,163 and its regulatory decree. Under that framework, the INV is the body in charge of applying regulations and issuing resolutions.
One of those resolutions is INV Resolution No. C. 23 of December 22, 1999, expanded via Resolution C. 18 of April 27, 2021. The Resolution is part of the above regulatory decree via Annex III. The Resolution governs a Basic Registry of Geographical and Production Areas that could potentially qualify to be recognized as Controlled Appellations of Origin and/or Geographical Indications if they meet specific quality and characteristic requirements for the production of grapes.
The petition for recognition, registration, protection and right to use the GI was filed by Borderío S.A. and the INV granted the request because the geographical area in question had been duly registered in the Basic Registry of Geographical and Production Areas and met all applicable legal requirements.
