Declaration of the Ibero-American Data Protection Network
On June 21, 2019, as a result of the Ibero-American Data Protection Meeting in Mexico, its members signed a “Declaration on the status of the Data Protection Authorities in Ibero-America.”
The main objective of the Ibero-American Data Protection Meeting (“IDPM”) is to promote (i) a regulatory framework for the right to data protection and (ii) responsible authorities to ensure its effective compliance in the region. Currently, the aim is to strengthen institutionalization, promoting the role of Data Protection Authorities through cooperation between regions. Special emphasis is placed on the need for a fluid and constant dialogue between the European and Latin American Control Authorities.
Within this framework, the Data Protection Authorities in Ibero-America (the “Declaration") requests collaboration and support to establish and institutionally strengthen through material and human resources, the Data Protection Authorities.
With the aim of enabling the institutional strengthening of national authorities and promoting strategic guidance, the IDPM agreed to the establishment and operation of a permanent Working Group comprised of the National Data Protection Authorities.
Likewise, given the new challenges posed by technology, the IDPM approved a document with the principles and recommendations for the processing of personal data in artificial intelligence, which establishes a set of criteria and guidelines to be taken into account.
