Through Resolution No. 4/2018, the Secretariat of Information and Communication Technologies created a Coalition for the implementation of IPv6.

Resolution No. 4/2018 states that internet protocol (IP) addresses are fundamental resources, and are vital to telecommunications and economic development. It further notes that Internet Protocol version 4 (“IPv4”) is the most widely used version, that it has a limited number of available addresses, and that on February 15 the Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre announced that we are close to exhausting these addresses. However, it also points out that the IPv6 protocol developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force was recently granted standard category, and that it has enough addresses for an almost limitless number of devices.

In this context, Resolution No. 4/2018 considers that it is necessary to do anything possible to encourage and facilitate transition to IPv6.

The objectives of the Coalition include analyzing the evolution of IPv6, articulating its development within the Argentine government and academic institutions, encouraging participation in international discussions, establishing communications in connection with its implementation and use, and analyzing possible risks.

Furthermore, Resolution No. 4/2018 states that the Coalition will coordinate its work with the Argentine Office for Domain Name Registration (Nic Argentina), the Argentine Communications Agency and the Argentine Office of Information Technology.
