Argentine Mining in the Media

"The new provincial director of Mining took office" published by El Ancasti on 02/02/2017
With the signing of Decree No. 65, Governor Lucía Corpacci decided to appoint María Agnes Ulla as the new Provincial Director of Mining, a position which had been occupied by Ing. Marcelo Reinoso.
"The federal government doubles mining investment" published by La Nación on 01/30/2017
The central tool of this policy - considered strategic by President Mauricio Macri and Energy Minister Juan José Aranguren - is a bill to establish a new Federal Mining Agreement. It aims to homogenize national and provincial legislations, to give investors tax stability, avoid conflicts with local governments and gain the support of the communities where the activity takes place.
The goal is to achieve investments of US $ 25 billion over the next eight years. It is more than twice the US $ 10 billion recorded between 2007 and 2015, but much less than what was invested in that time in Chile (US $ 80 billion) and Peru (US $ 52 billion).
"Making the criteria more flexible for defining protection zones is being analyzed" published by La Nación on 01/30/2017
In parallel with the preparation of a project for a new Federal Mining Agreement, the Government is preparing a reform of the regulatory decree for the glaciers law. Under analysis is the possibility to make the criteria more flexible used to define the zones prohibited for activities like mining.
The discussion is about the definition of the periglacial area , as the zones that surround the glaciers are called.
The Ministry of Mining aims that only those debris glaciers that have a "statistically significant" water contribution be considered as strategic reserves of water resources, and therefore protected. It also proposes that, in order to determine this, a "specific environmental assessment" should not be used, as the Ministry of Environment wants, but rather a "water significance study".
